A Century of Memories

A MAGNIFICENT milestone was celebrated earlier this month as one of our residents, Lilian Maclean, marked her 100th birthday.

The vibrant centenarian was surrounded by family, friends and fellow residents as she toasted her special day at her home at Tempest Anderson House in Darlington, where she has lived since the scheme was first opened in 1983.

Young-at-heart Lilian received heartfelt tributes and a special card from His Majesty the King in recognition of her incredible century-long journey.

She shared the secret to her longevity and look on life as she enjoyed a party in her honour.

She said: “Aside from living a relatively healthy lifestyle, the best thing she ever did was move into Tempest Anderson House as she knows she is safe and warm, and doesn’t have to worry about maintaining her home.” Lilian said she would recommend moving to retirement living before it is too late.

Lilian, who has five great-grandchildren, has lived through some of history’s most significant events, from world wars to technological revolutions – and she’s committed to being a tech-savvy centenarian, using her iPad to catch up with family in America.

Reflecting on her life, she shared memories of her working and family life, including her role during the Second World War.

After leaving school, Lilian worked as a shorthand typist at Bank Top House, where Railway Housing Association’s former head office was situated.

When the Second World War broke out, she enlisted in the WAAF where she learned to be a wireless operator using Morse Code. This took to her places like Wiltshire, Scotland and Norfolk, where she spent VE Day on an air base, before she returned to her old job in 1947.

Lilian has also worked in a factory making cardboard boxes and a record shop, in between bringing up her two children.

One of our board members, Sharon Thomas, joined the celebrations to present Lilian with flowers on our behalf.

She said: “I'm thrilled to be able to mark such a momentous occasion with such an incredible lady on behalf of Railway Housing Association.

“Lilian is a much-loved and active resident and we hope she enjoys her home for many years to come.”
