Board appointment

Railway Housing Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Carl Makin as Vice-Chair of our Board.

Carl first joined the Board in 2018, becoming the youngest member (aged 23 at the time) to serve in our 100-year history.

Now 27, Carl has taken on the position of Vice-Chair on our nine-member Board and this role will see him deputising for our Chair, Berni Whitaker, when she is unable to attend one of our meetings.

Carl works for the University of York where he combines lecturing with a PhD he is undertaking in social housing regulation. This follows a law degree he achieved at Durham University.

Carl, who did an internship at Railway Housing Association whilst he was studying for his degree, says he is delighted to have been appointed Vice-Chair.

“Railway Housing Association has always worked closely with and invested in local communities; getting to know the needs of its residents and applying a personal touch," he says.

“My focus as Vice-Chair will be looking at how we work with and listen to our residents, and this will entail meeting them in person (when it’s safe to do so) or through other communications channels and asking them what they want and expect from the Association.

“Ultimately, I hope this will lead to resident representation on the Board. It’s fantastic to have a current Board with such a wide spread of skills and knowledge but we must remember that our residents have huge skills sets too and nobody knows more about the services we provide than they do.

“One of the best things about being a member of the Board is that we are part of an organisation that understands and appreciates its history and has always had a strong sense of identity."

“As Board members we are simply acting as custodians who can play our part in ensuring the Association remains in good shape and retains it core values so it can continue for another 100 years and beyond."
