A Darlington man who does everything from shopping for his neighbours through to calling games of bingo for his fellow residents has been named as Railway Housing Association's Good Neighbour of the Year.
Robert Watson was the overwhelming choice of the judges in this year's competition.
He was nominated by the residents of Tempest Anderson House, a sheltered housing scheme in Brinkburn Road
Robert was joined by Jean Parsons who nominated him, and he received his trophy, along with £100 worth of shopping vouchers, at our recent residents’ conference in Darlington.
Jean said: “I am partially sighted so Robert has been a massive help to me, but he will do anything for anyone as that’s the kind of person he is.
“He shops for other residents, phones the Railway office on their behalf, makes teas and coffees for everyone and calls the bingo each week.
“He also made a beautiful floral display for the entrance at Tempest Anderson House, which he funded himself.”
Robert, a former Tablet Coater, said: “I have always been someone who likes to help others and whilst I don’t expect reward, it’s nice to know that my fellow residents think so highly of me and it’s an honour to receive this award.”
Matt Sugden, Railway Housing Association Chief Executive, said: “Mr Watson is clearly making a big difference to the lives of his fellow residents and it’s heartening to see people like this in our communities who go the extra mile to help others.
“He is a very deserving winner, and we would like to thank him for everything he does for people at Tempest Anderson House.”
This year’s award was sponsored by AAS Contractors, one of Railway Housing Association’s contractors.
Managing Director Alex Scott, who presented the award to Mr Robson, said: “As a third generation, local family-run company who have worked with Railway Housing Association for over 50 years, we are delighted to be associated with something like this which recognises the selfless efforts of residents.”
