The Big Conversation

Railway Housing Association recently hosted an inspiring community engagement event, proudly sponsored by partner consultants and contractors.

Held at the Darlington Arena and graciously hosted by the Mowden Park Rugby Club events team, "The Big Conversation" brought together 53 residents from across the association's service areas, including York, Scarborough, Leeds, Newcastle, Gateshead, Hereford, and Darlington. They were joined by association colleagues, partner contractors, and consultants.

The day began with a warm welcome from Railway Housing Association Chief Executive Matt Sugden, who outlined the programme and kicked off a fun game of bingo using the association’s street names. The winner received a room of their choice decorated by sponsors Mitie.

The primary goal of the event was to empower residents and give a great opportunity for Railway Housing Association to really listen to feedback by giving residents a platform to share their opinions and aspirations for the future. It provided an excellent opportunity for residents to engage directly with association colleagues and Board Members, share their thoughts on service improvements, and address their needs.

Participants actively engaged in workshops led by Adam Clark of Campbell Tickell and interactive sessions focused on the repairs service, led by Railway Housing Association Chief Operating Officer Chris Marshall. These sessions encouraged open communication and collaboration, allowing residents to voice issues, suggest improvements, and learn more about the repairs service through a game of "Who Wants to be a Railway Champion."

We were also proud to present our Good Neighbour of the Year award, sponsored by Alex Scott of AAS Construction, to Darlington resident Robert Watson. Railway Housing Association also underscored its commitment to listening to residents with the launch of a new Resident Committee.

The day concluded with a raffle of prizes and a heartfelt thank you and summary delivered by Vice-Chair Carl Makin. The event highlighted the association's dedication to fostering a more inclusive and responsive community environment and incorporating resident feedback into service improvement plans.

Overall, the event was a tremendous success with residents scoring the event 9.3 out of 10, strengthening the bond between Railway Housing Association and its residents, and paving the way for enhanced services and better communication in the future.  77% of residents also told us that they feel more positive about the future and also scored 9.1 out of 10 in how residents feel that Railway Housing Association listens to their views.

Carl Makin remarked, "Railway Housing Association is dedicated to serving you and future generations. We see ourselves as custodians of a legacy, ensuring you feel safe, happy, and secure in your homes. We never take this for granted, and we will keep the conversation going. In a year’s time, we hope you come back and tell us things are getting even better."
